Up until two years ago, make up hadn’t really been something I put that much effort into. My knowledge about it was pretty much limited to a touch of foundation and a flick of mascara! Even when I was planning my own wedding, I asked a friend who was doing my make-up to come up with a wedding look as I just didn’t know what I wanted. Then two years ago, I was going to a friend’s wedding and decided to do my own make-up and so I watched endless YouTube videos which, quite frankly, got me hooked on make-up. I really enjoyed perfecting the art of contouring and blending eyeshadows and in the midst of it all, I got my own Mum addicted to watching talented vloggers who taught the both of us (at the ripe age of 32 and 57, respectively) more about make-up than we’d ever known before. These days I don’t have that much time for following complex make-up video tutorials but I do try to stick to a simple make-up routine every morning before work.
So here are some make-up products that I’ve been using recently:
Inika Certified Organic Liquid Foundation (Cream shade)
Best natural foundation I’ve tried so far! It gives good coverage, makes my skin look flawless and smooth, and it contains organic ingredients – need i say more? Apply it over a face oil for best results. Buy from LoveLula.
Inika Certified Organic Lip & Cheek Cream
This versatile lip & cheek product works lovely as a blusher as well as a subtle lipstick. I like to apply it with my fingers on my cheeks after I’ve applied a highlighter (just underneath it) and then blend it with a brush. It leaves a very subtle rosy colour on the cheeks and a nice velvety sheen on the lips. Buy from MyPure.
Ere Perez Translucent Corn Perfecting Powder One For All*
Brilliant as a finishing powder which I use to mattify my slightly shiny face after I’ve applied face oil and liquid foundation. No need to worry about which shade to choose as it suits every skin tone. Buy from LoveLula.
Bellapierre Kiss Proof Lip Crème (Shade: Antique Pink)*
This lipgloss doesn’t have the best of ingredients (as it contains phenoxyethanol which can cause irritation, as well as silicones – Dimethicone and Cyclopentasiloxane) but I really love the colour and the fact that it stays on the lips for more than five minutes. However, the application is a bit tricky as the lipgloss dries soooo quickly and so the first few times I found it really difficult to get the contour right and ended up with wonky lips! Not a great sight, that’s for sure, and not easily rectifiable with this lipgloss as it tints lips so strongly it’s pretty impossible to remove it. I’ve found that applying it over a transparent lip balm helps achieve a smoother application and more accurate lip contouring. Buy from LoveLula.
Living Nature Organic Lipstick (Shade: Wild Fire)*
This lipstick is such a beauty – with a creamy and velvety feeling once applied, and organic ingredients including beeswax, coconut oil and carnauba wax (obtained from a palm tree native to and grown in certain Brazilian states and known as ‘the queen of waxes’). I really wanted to own a classic red lipstick and this nearly (!) hits all my requirements – it has a nice warm shade but in my opinion too much of an orange undertone for my skin tone, however my husband thinks it suits me so it’s here to stay 🙂 Buy from Botanical Brands.
Nanshy brushes (part of a 12-brush set Masterful Collection Pearlescent White)
Synthetic, vegan, cruelty-free and top quality! I’ve had them for over two years and couldn’t be more pleased with them. Despite being washed every week, they haven’t lost shape or any of the hairs! This set, which contains 12 brushes for face, eyes and lips, is also incredibly good value for money too! Buy from Nanshy.
PHB Ethical Beauty Black All-In-One Mascara*
Out of three natural mascaras that I’ve tried, this one gets my vote but it’s still far from perfect. Perhaps I apply too much of it on my bottom eyelashes but sometimes I end up with smudges under my eyes and sometimes I don’t. It has a good set of ingredients though, including nourishing olive oil and carnauba wax, so I’m persevering. Buy from LoveLula.
Dr Hauschka concealer
Mentioned previously in one of my monthly favourites (June 2017), this concealer works well to neutralise dark circles under my eyes. Gentle ingredients, decent coverage, no ‘caked up’ effect – that’s pretty much all you can ask from a concealer. Sadly, it looks like it’s not available from any UK websites at the moment. Other concealers can be purchased from Dr Hauschka.
Shiseido lash curler
I bought this curler on a whim a couple of years ago but then ended up not using it as, quite frankly, didn’t see that much of a difference. However, ever since rediscovering it amongst many unused beauty products and accessories a few months ago, I now can’t imagine my make-up routine without it. It’s easy to use and, what’s most important, gives my lashes a long-lasting lengthening effect. Buy from Fabled.
The Balm Mary-Lou manizer highlighter
Left over from the ‘yester years’ of using conventional make-up products, this highlighter is nearly finished and when it is, I won’t lie that I’ll miss it. It gives an absolutely stunning shimmer on my cheekbones which so many people have commented on but sadly, it hasn’t got a great ingredient formulation so I really need to start looking for a more natural equivalent.
And what’s in your make-up bag? I’d love to know so pop in your favourite products in the comment below.
