Another month has gone by in a flash and here I am again with a selection of my natural favourite products that I tried, tested and loved using in the month of July, from salt toothpaste (yes, you heard that right! salt toothpaste!) to natural perfume.

July 2017 skincare favourites

1. Weleda Salt Toothpaste

If you’re wanting to switch to fluoride-free toothpaste, I couldn’t recommend Weleda’s toothpastes enough. I’ve previously written about my love for their Calendula toothpaste but this inconspicuous salt toothpaste is a serious contender. You may already know that gurgling your mouth with salty water helps clear a mouth infection/ sore throat, and the salt (along with other gentle ingredients, such as ratanhia root, myrrh and chestnut bark) in this toothpaste does a similar job to your teeth, thanks to its anti-bacterial properties. I just love the squeaky clean feeling that the salt leaves on my teeth and a minty fresh (albeit a bit salty too) after taste around my mouth. What’s more important though is that I’ve genuinely seen a dramatic disappearance of the plaque and tartar on the inside of my teeth – so much so that I no longer need to have it removed by my dentist during my six-monthly check ups. I also have no doubt that this toothpaste has lightened my teeth – my Dad is a dental technician (who’s ingrained in me the importance of looking after your teeth) and even he has been so impressed with the results from this toothpaste.

2. herbfarmacy Skin Rescue Balm*

If you’ve read my other posts, you will know that I suffer from contact dermatitis, a type of eczema, which causes me to suffer from sporadic but sore flare ups (often brought on by stress but also harsh detergents), mostly on my hands. I tend to treat these flare-ups with raw shea butter but being curious whether other products can address the issue, I decided to give this rescue balm a go. It contains an interesting ingredient ‘combo’: shea butter (the mother of all hydrating ingredients), jojoba oil, chickweed (best known for its drying and soothing properties), calendula (anti-inflammatory properties), marshmallow (containing anti-inflammatory flavanoids) and comfrey (anti-inflammatory and wound healing due to its natural concentration of allantoin). The balm has a creamy consistency and melts upon contact with skin so a little amount goes a long way! I’ve tested it on a recent eczema flare up on my hand which it dealt with very well, smoothing the dry patch and soothing the itchiness pretty much overnight. Result!

3. PHB Ethical Beauty Skin Restore Gel with Aloe Vera

A summer essential which I’ll be packing away for our holidays later in the month! It contains the almighty aloe vera which is well-known for its soothing and cooling properties so we’ll have it at ready when/ if we (most likely me!) will start burning in the sun. There’s so many aloe vera-based cooling products on the high street but so many contain harsh preservatives so I urge everyone to do their research and boycott the brands that put our health at risk. We’ll be using this gel on our boys too as it provides immediate relief to any cuts and bruises, and those two boys of ours always bump into things! One final benefit of this gel is its ability to prevent the skin from scarring following a burn – something which I’ve experienced way too many times burning my fingers/ hands/ arms when cooking or taking stuff from the oven. As soon as you burn yourself, you need to apply this gel straight away and let the skin absorb it. After a few applications, the pain subsides as aloe vera works its magic to repair the skin and absorb the fluid that would normally end up being a blister. A really great multi-tasker that actually delivers so big thumbs up from me!

4. Trilogy Make-up Be Gone Cleansing Balm

If you’ve read any of my previous favourites posts, you’ll know that discovering oil cleansing has truly transformed my skincare cleansing routine and improved the condition of my skin. I’d heard of this NATRUE-certified balm before but stuck to my all-time favourites (Lyonsleaf and Balm Balm), however as I’m lucky enough to test new products every month, trying this one out was bound to happen at some point. The consistency of this balm is much different to what I’m used to: creamy and almost – dare I say it – vaseline like (!) but not as thick. I don’t think it’s as economical as the other cleansing balms I’ve tried as the lighter consistency means you need more product to distribute it across your face but I’ve discovered this balm works really great as eye make-up remover (despite essential oils being part of the formulation) so it gets a spot among my favourites for that particular function.

5. Therapi Honey Lip Nectar

This Soil Association-certified organic balm is a little pot of goodness, caring for your lips thanks to soothing properties of honey as well as moisturising properties of jojoba oil and shea butter. Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve been obsessed with lip balms and I have at least two or three always in use (one in my handbag, one at work/ bathroom/ bedside). This one is currently housed in my handbag as it’s my lifeline when commuting to work – the journey through those dirty underground tunnels can really dry out my lips every day so I need a reliable product. Not only does this balm work wonders on your lips (it recently even healed a small wound overnight!) but it’s also stored in the most gorgeous little glass jar with a rose gold lid with a bee engraved on it!

6. Walden ‘A Little Star-Dust’ Natural Perfume*

Natural perfumes were the last thing on my beauty products to switch for natural alternatives as I just don’t think there was an obvious place to start in terms of natural brands. So when I was offered a chance to test out LoveLula’s own brand of natural perfumes, Walden, I was excited to finally make that switch. I chose a full version of this Star-Dust perfume as the combination of fragrances appealed to me the most from all of the five fragrances in the range. With conventional perfumes in the past, I’ve tended to go for more earthy scents rather than florals, so this unique combo of ylang ylang, iris and jasmine, along with Tonka bean and Amyris sounded like my kinda thing. When I first got it, I must say I thought the ylang ylang and jasmine were too overpowering and so the bottle was just put aside. This perfume has really grown on me over the past two/three months though and I’ve had a couple of compliments about it which is always a good thing, isn’t it?. I also received sample sizes of the other scents and the ‘two eternities’ is also my favourite too.

7. Trevarno Shaving Soap*

I got this soap following a recommendation from the super supportive Facebook Group ‘LoveLula Natural Beauty Club’ and now I really regret I hadn’t discovered shaving soaps before as they’re so fab and such a great alternative to conventional shaving foams which often contain strong preservatives and other synthetic ingredients. You really need a little bit of this soap to distribute it on your skin as it lathers really well. The formulation of this soap contains a lovely mixture of oils (olive and coconut) and butters (shea and cocoa), therefore leaving skin smooth and hydrated after the shave. Not only a find of the month but a discovery of the year for me!

  1. I haven’t tried the Weleda toothpaste yet but it sounds great! Who doesn’t want to have whiter teeth, naturally? I am definitely going to get my hands on it in the future. And that shaving soap sounds great too!
