My skincare favourites for May 2017:
1. Weleda Skin Food
This is by far the best multi-tasking product and hand cream that I’ve ever used. I kind of rediscovered it again last month as it’s always at the bottom of Max’s changing bag and I just don’t moisturise my hands enough, which I should do as I suffer really badly from dry skin and contact dermatitis flare-ups. I’ve reviewed this cream in quite a lot of detail before in my post Two hand care essentials for a busy Mum. Buy from LoveLula.
2. herbfarmacy Organic Muslin Cloth*
I’ve mentioned in one of my previous monthly round-ups that I’m a big fan of oil cleansing and muslin cloths are an absolute must to ensure the oils are removed thoroughly. I have a few of these reusable cloths by different brands but the herbfarmacy ones have a slightly course structure to them which have a gentle exfoliating effect when cleansing. Even if you don’t use oil cleansing, these cloths are great for daily make-up removal and face washing, and a good (and eco-friendly) alternative to conventional cotton pads. Buy from LoveLula.
3. Weleda Calendula Toothpaste* (vegan)
Switching to this natural toothpaste has without a shadow of a doubt made my teeth whiter and removed unwelcome plaque from the inside of my teeth. Because it doesn’t have any foaming agents, brushing your teeth with this toothpaste can feel quite odd and it feels like you’re not cleaning your teeth properly but trust me, give it a few days and you’ll see a difference. Buy from LoveLula.
4. Homemade 100% organic ultra-silky facial oil (vegan)
Containing all organic ingredients at a fraction of the price that you’d pay for a shop-bought facial oil, this little beauty works really well as an overnight treatment or a base for a foundation. It really does feel quite silky when applying and you only need a couple of drops to massage it into your skin. The best thing about making your own products is that you know exactly what goes into them so there’s no need to study long names within ingredient lists 🙂 Recipe available here.
5. Living Nature Skin Revive Exfoliant*
Botanical Brands who are the UK’s official distributors for the New Zealand-based brand Living Nature kindly sent me this lovely exfoliator and I’m a big fan already. Many exfoliators can have that harsh abrasive feeling as you’re using them but this one feels very gentle. When applied to the face, it feels as if a gentle film is formed on your skin and then you can feel a gentle scrub of the Jojoba and Candelilla wax beads. It’s a little pricey, I must admit, but a small amount really goes a long way so this bottle will last for a long time. Full review of this exfoliant is my post Say no to plastic microbeads in skin exfoliants. Buy from Botanical Brands.
6. Antipodes Skin-Brightening Mineral Finishing Powder Translucent* (vegan)
Nearly ten months after having my little boy Max, I’m finally starting to be interested in make-up again and be bothered to apply it. Skincare has always been a non-negotiable part of my daily cleansing routine but make-up had definitely been at the bottom of my priority list for a very long time. My main make-up products at the moment are a foundation (or rather a BB cream which I reviewed in last month’s favourites), concealer, mascara, eyebrow pencil and a bit of blusher and highlighter. As I use facial oils as my base for the BB cream, my face can look a bit shiny. And this is where this amazing finishing powder comes in to my rescue. It makes my skin look matte but without it looking ‘caked’, instead it definitely brightens it and has a very natural finish. Again, it’s a bit pricey but I know some ‘designer’ brands charge around the same amount but with this one, you’re definitely getting a better ingredient list. Buy from LoveLula
7. Therapi Honey Skincare Orange Blossom Hydrating Toner (vegan)
This brand had been on my radar for a while so I was super happy when I had the opportunity to visit them at the pop-up shop organised by the Soil Association for their Organic Beauty & Wellbeing Week last month. I had a good chat with Therapi Founder Tanya Hawkes who took the time to discuss my skin’s needs in order to recommend the most suitable products for me to buy. She also threw in a sample of this gorgeous smelling toner which I now spritz on my face after cleansing every night and as a base for my facial oil in the morning. The calendula within it is said to have soothing properties especially for the most sensitive skin and I can certainly see the difference its’s had on my usually red cheeks and nose area. I still have a few other Therapi products to test but I’m definitely loving this toner so far. Buy from LoveLula.
